This is a fun, two-part class to both hunt for and find used tool treasures at the Old Tool Swap Meet at Anderson Plywood in Culver City and to then tune-up and sharpen those tools at Allied Woodshop the following day. Sarah Watlington and Scott Nelson will be at the Old Tool Swap Meet from 7:00am-10:00am on Saturday, May 16 to offer input and advice on any tools that you might be interested in. This field trip is open to anyone at no cost, but please do register for the Saturday session so that we know how many people to expect.
On Sunday, we'll meet up at Allied Woodshop from 9:00am-4:30pm to tune-up and sharpen any new or used edge tools you have, such as chisels, scrapers, and hand planes. We'll start with a general overview of how to tune-up a hand plane and chisel to include addressing any problems and lapping tool backs. The afternoon will offer a focus on sharpening. We'll overview the many sharpening systems available to woodworkers to include bench stones (both oil and water stones), honing films and a glass plate, and motorized systems (both the Work Sharp and Tormek).
With ample instruction and time to work on your tools, participants will achieve the kind of tool edges that make woodworking a pleasure. Once tools are sharp, the instructors will demo the proper use of each tool and allow students time to practice with their newly sharpened tools.
Please note that this class will not address sharpening tools with a rounded edge, such as gouges and spokeshaves.
Bring your own chisels, hand planes, and any other edge tools you wish to sharpen. If you own water stones or oil stones, bring those too. Class is limited to ten students.
