Chisels

Description

Learning how to use handheld chisels properly is a must for any woodworker. Hand-cut joinery, shaping, and cutting out space for hardware all require handling a chisel. Build your chisel skills with the ultimate cutting exercise: the Gottshall block. The challenge of the Gottshall block is to recreate the given image using only hand tools. Layout is done using a pencil and combination square, and all cutting is done with a chisel and a mallet. The exercise builds on different ways of approaching chisel cuts (bevel up, bevel down, and chopping). Understanding grain direction is imperative for creating clean cuts and avoiding tear out.

All materials and supplies are included. Class is limited to ten students.

Please note, it is critical that students arrive on time. We cannot allow students who have missed instruction to join the class late. This is a serious safety concern, and we appreciate your understanding.

COVID-19 Update:
Starting September 30, 2021, Allied Woodshop will require all students 12 years of age and older and all instructors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to attend a group class. Proof of vaccination will need to be shown at the start of the class. If you are unable to provide proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours prior to the class may be accepted.
