Experience the quiet pleasure of woodworking with hand tools while making a beautifully simple Japanese tool box. Over the course of 2 days, students will learn the function and safe use of different kinds of hand planes. After practicing with the tools, students will flatten boards, trim to 90 degrees, and cut miter joints by hand with a shooting board. Finally, students will fine tune a hand plane to prepare the box parts for finishing. No sanders here!

This is a great class for those who would like to start woodworking with hand planes at home and are wondering which tools to buy. Rent a set from us and come try them out while making a box!

Total class time is 7 hours and limited to two students.

All wood, hardware, and finishing supplies are included. This workshop requires you to bring your own set of hand tools, or rent a set from the shop for $40. You can book your tool rental on the Hand Tool Rental page. The tools you will need include the following. 

Required:

• Jack plane
• Block plane
• Smoothing plane

Optional:

• Jointer plane
• Marking gauge

Each private class will be paired with one of our talented and experienced instructors.

What to Wear
Please wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes. Boots or sneakers are fine and long pants are preferable. Do not wear loose or baggy clothing and please tie back long hair. No dangly jewelry. Please note, this is a woodshop with no AC. You can expect to get sweaty and dusty. Woodworking is hard work!

Refund and Transfer Policy
Private instruction can be refunded up to three months after purchase, minus a $50 registration fee, if it has not already been scheduled or completed. We require one week's advance notice to reschedule any previously scheduled hours, and we are only able to accommodate one change request. There are no refunds or rescheduling for private instruction hours that are scheduled and not attended.
